How do I mix the nectar?

Mix 1 part nectar mix with 4 parts water. Stir until dissolved. If you used warm water, let it cool before filling your feeder.

Why don't you add red dye?

Because hummingbirds don't need it — the red parts of your feeder are what draw them in. Adding artificial coloring gives them nothing they actually want and may not be good for them.

Why not honey, brown sugar, or powdered sugar?

Accepted Answer

Honey can grow harmful bacteria and fungi. Brown sugar contains molasses (iron) which is unhealthy for hummingbirds. Powdered sugar contains cornstarch. Pure cane sugar is what mimics natural flower nectar most closely.

How often should I change the nectar in my feeder?

Every 2–3 days in hot weather. Once a week when it's cooler. If it looks cloudy, replace it.
